Plot: Blustery funnyman Lewis Black hits the stage for this Comedy Central special, which finds the comic using his wry observational humor to skewer everything from Washington politicians and the tanking economy to cell phones and getting old. Filmed at the landmark Fillmore Detroit theater in 2009, this film also finds Black ranting and raving about religion -- especially when mixed with politics -- and much more.

But now astronomers think that rather than being a space menace, black holes may be fundamental to the creation of galaxies.Black holes are regions of space where gravity is so strong that not even light can escape, making them impossible to see. Featuring a lineup of scholars, politicians, critics and comedy legends including Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, Keenan Ivory Wayans and Eddie Griffin, this documentary is inspired by author Darryl Littleton’s book “Black Comedians on Black Comedy.”

An off-screen narration, four dozen talking heads, and clips of performances tell a chronological story about Black comedy: who has made us laugh since 1901, what is the nature of their humor, and what social and political contexts inform it. We look at minstrels, Stepin Fetchit, "Amos 'n Andy," "Beulah," Redd Foxx, Dick Gregory, Flip Wilson, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, "The Cosby Show," Chris Rock, Whoopi, "Hollywood Shuffle," entrepreneurship and Black comedy clubs, Robert Harris, urban street culture and "In Living Color," the rise of the Fox network, Def Comedy Jam, and the Original Kings of Comedy. The film asserts Black comedy helps America change.

In Mexico and Peru Professor Gates explores the almost unknown history of the significant numbers of black people the two countries together received far more slaves than did the United States brought to these countries as early as the 16th and 17th centuries, and the worlds of culture that their descendants have created in Vera Cruz on the Gulf of Mexico, the Costa Chica region on the Pacific, and in and around Lima, Peru.
