“Patient X” is a horror film from the Philippines that uses the local legend of the aswang as the key antagonists of the story. In their folklore, the aswang is a vampire like creature that also has some very bizarre sounding attributes that are unique. I had read about them before many years ago and at one time wanted to write a script revolving around them. So I was excited to see “Patient X”, only to have that excitement fade when I realized all they were going to do be in the film were your basic bloodsuckers. It wasn’t a bad film, it was pretty good, it just felt that they were going for a film that could be marketed to a western audience as well.

Japanese-born Korean director Yoichi Sai has a bit of a conflicting reputation as a director in his native Japan. While his previous work was the unrelentingly brutal critical winner Blood and Bones, Sai also found commercial success in the same year with the cute puppy film Quills. However, Sai's Korean directorial debut Soo shows very clearly the type of reputation he wants to build in Korea. The violent revenge film required multiple cuts and went through multiple submission processes before it was approved by the censorship board. But even as a revenge action flick, Soo is definitely something different than what one might expect from Sai.

In Just Another Pandora's Box, everything old is new again - even if you don't quite know where you've seen it before. Director Jeff Lau directs this cameo-a-minute costume comedy that parodies many films, most of them also directed by Jeff Lau. The biggest non-Lau films to get skewered: Titanic and especially Red Cliff, with the latter providing the basis for the plot. Lau's trademark postmodern romance and self-referential jokes also return, and combine with sight gags and anachronisms to help make Just Another Pandora's Box creative and surprising. That is, when everything isn't weighed down by the aimless, momentum-killing story. Like most nonsense comedies, Just Another Pandora's Box is a hit and miss affair that depends largely on audience knowledge and goodwill to make it a success. If all else fails, you can simply play "spot the star".
