Kris entered Grappling and Sport Jio-Jitsu competitions and then met Eddie Carpentier, a professional wrestler and trainer at the gym where Kris was teaching his unique grappling style.

As Kris says:

One day after I had just finished teaching a class, he came up to me and politely told me that what I was doing was wrong. He went on to show me proper way to do a front headlock and a leg lock (that I had just shown). I was a bit reluctant at first, thinking that since he was a pro-wrestler he probably didnt know much in terms of real wrestling. MAN, WAS I WRONG…

Eddy practically tore my head off with the headlock and did the same with the leg lock. I swear, it took two weeks of regular visits to my chiropractor to finally get back into training.

Training with Eddy was pretty rough. He was a conditioning freak. He really opened my eyes to the fact that grappling had become really watered down due to tournament rules and that, when it came to grappling, there was a whole world out there I didnt know about.

At that time I kept doing what I always did and just kept incorporating the Catch-As-Catch-Can principles and techniques into my game. But the more I played around with it, the more I realized that it didnt need to be mixed with anything else.
