Honestly, I think you can pretty much make a hardcover book with success after watching Larry Withers's Bookbinding: A Traditional Technique. This is almost as good as an interactive workshop that you'll get — except this will cost you less than $20! And you can even pause and rewind to repeat a step! Larry won’t get annoyed with you if you keep “asking” him to repeat the last step.

The instructional video covers the required materials, folding, sewing, creating the cover, and casing-in for creating a flat-back hardcover book. Each step is shot with clarity (with close-ups) and repetition that you can really see how he maneuvers the threads and paper. Withers has a very soothing voice, he explains and guides you through steps with patience. I find that his style very much keeps me focus on each and every step of the instructions.

But this is probably why the video appears to be really dry, which I think is indeed a good thing. Its focus is the instructions, not entertainment, so if you’re not interested in the subject matter you’ll probably find the video very boring, but then again, you probably wouldn’t watch it in the first place.
It seems that Bookbinding veers more or less towards novice bookbinders and experienced artists or craftsmen, and you probably need to be already comfortable with using an X-Acto knife and a cutting mat. Withers demonstrates the techniques and tips that an experienced bookbinder would have accumulated through years of artistry, such as the turning in method and measuring the gutter on the cover. He also explains the number one fundamental of bookmaking: the direction of paper grains. Alternative materials, such as using a temporary sewing frame, are introduced so that you can create your book at home. An experienced bookmaker would probably find these techniques less interesting.

Nonetheless, Bookbinding should appeal to both professional and novice bookbinders. An experienced bookmaker should be able to refine their skills by learning about the alternative methods. I, for example, learnt from the video another way to pull swellings down and to measure the gutters.

As I mentioned before, bookbinders have techniques that have become habits, which may or may not apply to everyone, but the exciting thing about seeing how other bookbinders work is that you can always pick up new techniques to advance or improve your own.
