Darwin's continued voyage aboard the HMS Beagle led him to
recover specimens that are still of scientific value today.
Darwin dreaded his return to England as he knew his father was
not pleased with his choice in career. But on his travels
Darwin met a man of high stature who sent Darwin's father a
letter explaining what a remarkable scientist his son was.
This led Darwin's father to the conclusion that he could
follow his dream of becoming a natural scientist. Darwin
embarked on the Beagle voyage as a Christian. The great
variety and complexity of the natural world which he
encountered on the voyage caused him to question the validity
of the established order which he had been taught.
On Darwin's return home to England he began to question
himself and his work. He knew his theory was controversial and
that the potential for misinterpretation was very high. Just
as Darwin was about to have his document The Origin of Species
published another young scientist wrote an almost identical
theory as Darwin's. Feeling despondent Darwin almost never had
his works published. After the death of his ten-year-old
daughter Darwin was stricken with grief. He spent much of his
life in solitude refusing to ever answer questions about his
work. He never ceased his investigations into species and he
continued to have his works published.
