Horizon - The Chopper (1982)
Begins with an example of a helicopter type aircraft from an early science-fiction movie, then covers the evolution of a practical design with old research films made different designs. A female Fokker test pilot recalls her experience getting the first practical helicopter into the air. The leading designers in the US - Sikorsky and Bell - then take much programme time. The aerodynamic principles whereby a helicopter lifts and flies forward are explained

Next, the programme looks at experimental technologies of the era in which it was made. An Apple II is used to demonstrate speech recognition used to command changing displays on a CRT designed to replace a multitude of cockpit dials. A one-handed control to simplify two sticks and two pedals is investigated. Helmet-mounted heads-up displays for weapon aiming is demonstrated as designed for the then prototype Apache helicopter.

Slow-motion footage from a rotor-mounted camera shows the flexing of the rotating helicopter blade is shown, and some interesting smoke trails showing rotor-tip vortices. The ungainly helicopter is also shown doing graceful loops and rolls in the air.

Fibre optic controls layered into a composite material cockpit of the future are suggest to replace wires and cables. An engineering concept for ejector seats shown in slow motion. (Duh... think what that means to eject up out of helicopter cockpit !!! Yikes !!! ).

Replacement concepts for the tail rotor are considered, after showing footage of a stricken helicopter spinning bodily in the air after losing its tail rotor.

Contra-rotating (ABC - advancing blade concept) main rotors are considered so that with the two rotors there is an advancing blade on each side of the craft to contribute forward motion. A prototype outperforms any conventional helicopter with a top speed of 250 mph, using jet engines, and avoiding the need for a tail rotor because the two contra-rotating rotors cancel spin transfered to the body of the craft.

Tilt-rotor prototypes are shown presaging the present Osprey which is a helicopter that can cruise forward at 300 mph using its rotors swung to operate in a position like a propellor plane (or a plane that can use its propellors swung upward to take off vertically).
