This is the complete season of the MTV show called "Teen Mom 2"

From the very first episode of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant, I knew they were the Olympic Gold medalists of unfit mothers. They were narcissistic, flippant, shockingly immature. And I’m not talking about Marci, Farrah, Amber or Catelynn. No, I’m talking about their mothers.

One year and one spin-off later, the girls we followed from homeroom to the delivery room are tabloid sensations. The August 30th cover of US Weekly—which featured teen moms Maci and Farrah clutching their toddlers like carnival prizes—was one of the magazine’s biggest sellers of the summer. In the weeks following, People and Ok! Magazine have followed suit and watched their newsstand sales hit the mother load. Pun intended.

One critic at Fox News suggests the tabloids send “the wrong message to impressionable young readers by covering teen moms the same way they do Sandra Bullock or Angelina Jolie.” I think they’re missing a crucial point:

Most American teenagers don’t get knocked up because they think it will land them a TV role. More often, girls get in a Bristol Palin-way because they subconsciously expect a baby to provide all the affection, attention and love that their own emotionally disturbed parents couldn’t. In their book Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting, Patricia East and Marianne Felice write: “Frequently, teenagers who become pregnant have not had someone to parent them, thus they have a child thinking that the child will be the parent.”

Teen Mom makes me so miserable that it’s almost impossible to watch. It’s not so much the three a.m. wake-ups that make me feel for the real-life Junos. It’s not even the way they end up mothering both their toddlers and their boyfriends. What really puts me on edge are the interactions between the teen moms and their troubled families. It’s watching Catelynn’s mother sneer as she auditions prom dresses. (Among her maternal pearls of wisdom: “You look like a sardine.” And “Yeah get that one…if you want to look ugly.”) When a county prosecutor reveals photos of the kitchen knives that Farrah’s mom threatened her with, I have to press mute and look away.
