For fans of Silver Age Russian music, the series of recordings called The Anthology of Russian Symphony Music is absolutely necessary. Conducted and selected by Evgeny Svetlanov, the recordings in this series included virtually every Russian orchestral work written between Glinka and Rachmaninov worth hearing. Recorded between 1971 and 1993, some of these recordings were intermittently available in the West through licensing agreements, while others were released only in the USSR. In the early years of the twenty-first century, however, Svetlanov's estate began issuing all of them on the international market, thereby deeply gratifying fans of the music in the West.

Take this six-disc set coupling works by Balakirev and Lyapunov. The former composer is slightly better known than the latter through Karajan and Beecham's recordings of his First Symphony from the '50s. But most of the music here will be known only to the most indefatigable fans of the composers. How many, after all, know Balakirev's Second Symphony much less his Suite in D minor on four pieces by Chopin, or either of Lyapunov's symphonies, much less his symphonic poem Hashish depicting slave girls cavorting in a harem under the influence of the drug of the title?

But while the music is hardly known in the West, in Svetlanov's confident performances, it all sounds well-worth knowing. Balakirev's originality is consistently amazing -- he skips the recapitulation in the opening movement of the First Symphony, for example -- while Lyapunov's morbidity is consistently depressing -- his Second Symphony sounds like the apocalypse has already begun -- though anyone who values Tchaikovsky's death-obsessed Sixth will surely appreciate Lyapunov's Second. The State Academic Orchestra of Moscow is a rough and ready ensemble whose raw tone, pungent colors, and passionate attack suit the music perfectly. Though the sound is variable at best, the unfamiliarity of the repertoire and the conviction of the performances more than compensates for it.
