Six piano concertos in a mere twelve months: in no other year was Mozart as productive in this genre as he was in 1784. Christian Zacharias and his Lausanne Chamber Orchestra have taken considerably more time with their interpretations of Mozart’s piano concertos – and with sensational results. This complete recording even now promises to occupy one of the top ranks on international lists: Zacharias is able perfectly and seamlessly to transfer his inimitable touch and sound culture to the orchestra.

Mozart - Concertos KV 482 and 595 (Vol. 1) [2003]


He has also no shred of conventional technique. Instead, he acts as though the music were a physical substance to be molded in air, his hands, body, face all employed to shape phrases.

Mozart - Concertos KV 413 and 271 (Vol. 2) [2005]


KV 271, 'Jeunhomme' lasts for just over half an hour with the third movement split into three distinct parts. The Andantino is quite delightful as Zacharias plumbs the depths of the work with his usual aplomb and coaxes the orchestra to some inspired highs.
KV 413 is mellower and direct but no less inspired and Zacharias is again master of all that goes on around him. I wouldn't say that these versions pip Curzon or Anda' who remain my perennial favourites in Mozart piano concertos but they do run them quite close.

Mozart - Concertos KV 453 and 456 (Vol. 3) [2008]


This, as the title indicates, is the third volume in Zacharias' cycle of the piano concertos. It promises to be an enjoyable prospect (if incomplete due to the first two volumes being released on RBCD only - perhaps a reissue will follow) - one should be aware that this is not performed in the HIP style so widely used today and for those steeped in either the HIP style or period instruments, the rich tone of the Steinway piano (in wonderful condition incidentally) and the vibrato laden strings will come as something of a shock to the ears. For those recoiling in horror, it should be noted that the strings are not heavy (as was the case all too often in the 1960's) but the vibrato is used to round-out the sound (think perhaps Perahia's ECO).

Christian Zacharias has been recording with MDG for 10 years, during which time all his recordings have been among the most outstanding that MDG has produced. Here he continues his exploration of the Mozart Piano Concertos. The members of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne are superb accompanists to the fine keyboard playing of Zacharias.
