This set marks the 50th anniversary of Davis' new modal jazz approach as recorded in 2 impromptu sessions with his sextet including John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Billy Cobb on March 2 and April 2, 1959. The entire album was composed as a series of modal sketches and was conceived only hours before the recording dates.
