Ubuntu - an operating system based on the kernel Linux. Is a fork from the OS Debian GNU / Linux. The main developer and sponsor - the company Canonical. The project is actively developed and supported by the free community. Its name derives from the word «Ubuntu», which translated from Zulu means approximately "humanity."

The new version of the distribution goes every 6 months, supported by security updates for 18 months or 3 and 5 (Server Edition) years for versions of LTS (born Long Term Support - «long-term support").

Ubuntu comes with a selection of software for servers and workstations. Distribution is set by c LiveCD (version «desktop») or a text installer (version «alternate»). There are versions for architectures i386, AMD64, ARM, and others.

Major changes:
• RC release includes the Linux kernel 2.6.35-22.33, based on the 2.6.35.4 Upstream stable kernel, includes an additional subsystem to enter the patches to improve the multitouch capabilities, improved support Sandybridge;
• GNOME desktop environment has been updated to version 2.32 and now includes dconf and gsettings API;
• Email client Evolution updated to version 2.30 and now works much faster than before (compared to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS);
• Picture Manager Shotwell replaced the F-Spot;
• Gwibber has been updated to support latest changes in the authentication system Twitter;
• Enhanced Sound Indicator (audible indicator);
• Updated the look of Ubuntu Software Center, including new sections to view the applications "Featured" and "What's New", improved package descriptions and added the category "For Purchase" («To purchase") - you can now buy commercial software for Ubuntu. You can also easily access the history of the installation package;
• Ubuntu One: better integration with Ubuntu SSO, improved Nautilus file manager to control the synchronized folders, the more high-speed file synchronization, reference is made to the music in Ubuntu One Music Store.
